Puri Guliani Cafe

The chef and his adjaraulis
After going up the Funicular tram and exploring Mtatsminda park, definitely stop at Puri Guliani cafe within the station before going down the tram again. This cafe offers salads and Georgian cuisine, however, it's mainly a cafe dedicated to desserts. If you do need a little substance before diving into dessert, definitely try the adjaruli khachapuri. It's still khachapuri but it's from the Adjara region (the region next to the black sea) and it looks nothing like the common Imeruli and Megruli region khachapuris. Adjaruli khachapuri summed up is a bread bowl with cheese, butter, and eggs in the middle (you can order it without the butter but you might as well go all in when enjoying adjaruli). The "proper" way to
eat it is to mix the insides with a fork and then to just break the bread bowl edges for dipping inside the mix. Just as a warning, however, adjaruli is very good but its also very filling, so if you want to make room for dessert it's best you share with a friend despite the single serving size.
At this cafe, the adjaruli and other baked and dough goods are made
in a masonry oven (also known as a pizza oven) right in the middle of
the restaurant. As soon as you walk, in you will find a "bar" of various
cakes and ice creams you can order, but personally, I really enjoy the
crêpes with chocolate sauce and ponchikis. In fact, no matter what
you get, you kind of have to get at least one ponchiki while you're here
because this place is most known for their ponchikis. It can usually
get pretty crowded here but it's still a fantastic place to stop and eat.
The staff is very friendly and the prices are affordable, and you will
often find a mix of kids with their families and young people all just
indulging their sweet tooths. Overall, if you find yourself at Funikular,
definitely make sure to stop by Puri Guliani cafe.
